Effective Email Subject Lines

Just because your email was delivered, doesn’t mean it will be read. Your email subject line is often your only chance to persuade a recipient that you have sent valuable, interesting or important information relevant to them.

MailChimp, after analyzing emails sent through their system, can provide insight into what works. The company reports that subject lines that are short yet descriptive and avoid “splashy or cheesy” phrases have higher open rates.

MailChimp also recommends avoiding salesy or overused words such as “free” or “reminder” which can be caught in spam filters or simply ignored by users.

Personalizing your subject line with a recipient's name can increase open rates as can keeping your subject lines fresh. MailChimp also states that subject lines framed as questions tend to perform better.

MailChimp doesn’t discuss the use of emoji in subject lines in terms of best practices, but there are definitely strong opinions on the matter.
